The Tenth House: responsibility in public
The Tenth House describes the public part of life: responsibilities, reputation and the roles through which other people recognise your contribution. It is closely associated with the Midheaven, or MC. In some house systems the MC is the Tenth House cusp; in others it can fall in a different house, so the two should be read with that distinction in mind.
Career is a common way these topics appear, but public responsibility also includes unpaid leadership, community work and being the person others depend on to organise something. The question is less 'Which job am I destined for?' and more 'What do I want to be accountable for, and what standards come with that role?'
The Fourth House supplies a useful counterpoint: private needs and roots can support or complicate a public commitment. A role that looks impressive may not suit the life you want around it. The Tenth House's ruler and planets help identify themes to explore, while qualifications, opportunities, resources and choices determine how a real career or public contribution develops.

Is the Midheaven always in the Tenth House?+
It forms the Tenth House cusp in many quadrant systems. In whole-sign houses it can fall in another house, so an astrologer may read both the angle and the Tenth House separately.
Can an empty Tenth House still be important for my career?+
Yes. Its cusp sign and ruler remain part of the reading, alongside the Midheaven where appropriate. A busy professional life does not require natal planets in the Tenth House.
Why do my Midheaven sign and Tenth House sign differ in whole-sign houses?+
The Midheaven is an angle, while whole-sign houses assign one entire sign to each house. The angle can therefore fall outside the Tenth. Read the public-role symbolism of both rather than assuming the chart is wrong.
How do I interpret Mercury in the Tenth House without choosing a job from it?+
Explore the role of explaining, writing or coordinating in how you contribute publicly. Those functions appear in many occupations. Actual interests, skills and working conditions should guide a career decision.
Does the Tenth House describe public contribution if I am not in paid employment?+
It can. Responsibility in a family, community or organisation may be visible and consequential without a salary or title. Avoid reducing a person's public contribution to conventional employment.
