An opposition places two positions on opposite sides of the zodiac. Its symbolism highlights a pair of concerns that can seem to compete for attention while also defining one another. Independence becomes clearer in relation to partnership, for example, and public responsibility becomes clearer alongside the need for a private life.
In a personal reading, an opposition may be explored as an alternation: giving one priority so much room that the other eventually demands attention. A Sun-Moon opposition can frame questions about purpose and emotional needs. The aim is not to make them identical, but to recognise when each needs a place in the choices being made.
Oppositions can also become visible through relationships when someone appears to embody a quality you struggle to own. That possibility does not make every disagreement a projection. How does an opposition differ from a square?+
An opposition places themes across an axis, while a square connects them at roughly a right angle. Astrologers often read the first through polarity and the second through friction, but neither has one universal outcome.
How do I measure an opposition when the longitudes are 182° apart?+
Use the shorter arc, which is 178°, and compare it with 180°. Either description places the contact 2° from exact opposition. The orb records closeness; it does not by itself supply the interpretation.
Does a Sun-Moon opposition at birth mean I have conflicting personalities?+
No. A reading may explore the relationship between conscious direction and emotional needs, but those are aspects of experience rather than separate personalities. Ask when each need deserves attention and how they can be expressed together.
Are opposite zodiac signs automatically incompatible in relationships?+
